Margot Kidder, Superman

Margaret Ruth Kidder, who was known professionally as Margot, was born in Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Her father Kendall was an engineer and explosives expert. Her mother, the former Jocelyn Wilson, taught history. Of Welsh and English ancestry, she had four siblings, one of whom – Annie – is a Canadian actress.

Margot graduated from Havergal College in Toronto in 1966 and made her film debut in a 49-minute movie in 1968. In 1970, after moving to Los Angeles, she co-starred with Gene Wilder in “Quackser Fortune has a Cousin in The Bronx.”

And she really hit her stride in “Superman” in 1975.

She also starred opposite James Brolin as Kathy Lutz in the 1979 haunted house thriller “The Amityville Horror.”

Married and divorced three times, she had one daughter. She was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a 1990 auto accident and entered a manic state for several days.

She subsequently received some rough treatment in the “Family Guy” TV series.

By 2007, Margot credited her medication in helping her avoid manic episodes for more than a decade.

Margot was found dead in her home in Livingston, Montana in the Spring of 2018. Originally, it was reported that she died in her sleep at the age of 69. However, a few months later in August 2018, the Park County coroner said she committed suicide, dying of a self-inflicted overdose of drugs and alcohol.
